The Pete Dye Canyon Golf Course in Park City, Utah, and The Hideout Golf Club in Monticello, Utah, were each selected as winners of Golf Inc. Magazine’s 2003 Development of the Year competition.
The contest, conducted by the nation’s leading publication for golf course owners, developers and general managers, was designed to highlight the country’s most innovative new courses opened during the past year. Selections were based on aesthetic and environmental qualities and on the ability of the development team to realize its overall vision for the course.
The Hideout was the winner in the category for courses built for less than $5 million. It was developed by the City of Monticello and designed by Forrest Richardson and Associates. Daylen Inc. was the contractor. Avery Ranch Golf Club in Austin, Texas, was runner-up in that category. Robert D. Wunsch and Waterstone Development Group were the developers. Andy Raugust was the architect and Wadsworth Golf Construction built the course. Honorable mention in that category went to Deep Brook Golf Club in Saco, Maine. It was developed by Don and Tonie Guay. Brad Booth was the architect and Joe Freeman was the contractor.
The Pete Dye Canyon Golf Course, part of Promontory – The Ranch Club, won first place in the $5 million and over category. Developed by Pivotal Group, the course was designed by architect Pete Dye. Contractor was Ames Construction.
Runnerup in the $5 million and over course classification went to Trump National Golf Club in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Donald Trump was the developer and Jim Fazio the architect, with The Trump Organization serving as contractor. Honorable mention in that category went to The Ridge at Back Brook in Ringoes, N.J. Developer was Joel D. Moore. Fazio Golf Course Designers was the architect and Pavelec Bros. Golf Course Construction the contractor.
Judges for the competition were Roy Gaddey of Lake Jovita Joint Venture, Richard Mandell of Richard Mandell Golf Architecture and Tom Tipton of Carl M. Freeman Golf. Additional information about the Development of the Year winners will be included in the November edition of Golf Inc. Magazine.
